Today – or actually yesterday at sunset – marks the beginning of the Jewish year 5786. And that’s a reason to celebrate with our Jewish friends in Israel and around the world! Shanah Tovah! Happy Feast of Trumpets / Rosh Hashanah / Yom Teruah!

Last Sunday at Celebration Church I spoke about this feast , which in Jewish tradition is called Rosh Hashanah (“head of the year”). I pointed out that the biblical name for the feast is Yom Teruah (“day of the trumpet blast”), and falls in the seventh month of the year biblically speaking. The interesting thing is that the Torah doesn’t say much about Yom Teruah. There are just instructions about rest, a holy gathering, sacrifices and [drum roll] the blowing of a shofar (ram’s horn / trumpet).

A shofar is usually made from a ram’s horn. They come in all different sizes. This is a small one.

If anything, Yom Teruah is a mystery feast for which God never told the Israelites the “why,” at least not in Torah days. That changes with some of the writing prophets, such as Joel. The rabbis also filled in some of the blanks. And by the time Jesus walks on this earth and the New Testament is written, the Holy Spirit had birthed an expectation in the hearts of the Jewish people that Yom Teruah is – among other things – about the coming of a King.

So, let me connect the dots for you. Just watch the video from Sunday’s service and read my notes, and you’ll find out why Yom Teruah is such an important feast pointing to Jesus, to Yeshua, the Jewish Messianic King!
