It’s Ascension Day on the western Christian calendar. It the day when we remember that Jesus was taken up into heaven after he died on the cross for the sins of the world and then rose on the third day. I had to think of these verses in the Book of Acts, which faithfully recounts the story of the early church:

Jesus left this earth from the Mount of Olives in a cloud and will return in the same way and to the same place. He is our God and our Messianic King.

“And when he had said these things, as they were looking on, he was lifted up, and a cloud took him out of their sight. And while they were gazing into heaven as he went, behold, two men stood by them in white robes, and said, “Men of Galilee, why do you stand looking into heaven? This Jesus, who was taken up from you into heaven, will come in the same way as you saw him go into heaven.”” (Acts‬ ‭1‬:‭9‬-‭11‬ ‭ESV‬‬)

He is now seated on the throne at the right hand of the Father in Heaven. The keys of the kingdoms of this earth are his now, and he will return to set up his throne in the city of Jerusalem and rule over Israel and all the nations.

The turmoil you see in the world today are, according to Psalm 2, a threefold rebellion 1) against YHWH, 2) against Jesus the Anointed, Messianic King, and 3) against Zion, the Jewish people and the Jewish land.

I am looking forward to that Day that will be coming soon when Jesus will defeat his enemies and establish his peace, his shalom, from Jerusalem to the whole earth.

“He will come back in the same way as he went to heaven.”

Let’s remember to pray for Israel, the Jewish people, and for Israel’s enemies that they will turn to Jesus, the Jewish anointed King. Also, let’s pray for ourselves that we will be ready for his return!

  1. Where have you found in Scripture that Jesus will set up his throne in the geographical city of Jerusalem, which is ‘in slavery with her children’ (Galatians 4:24)? This is most unlikely. In Acts 1:10 it says that He will come back ‘in the same way’. It does not say: to the same place. This specific ‘way’ or manner of Jesus’ return is not limited geographically or physically. For is says in Revelation 1:7 that ‘every eye will see Him’.

    1. Thanks for your comment! The overwhelming testimony of the Hebrew Bible concerns a physical return of YHWH to a physical place (Jerusalem / Zion).

This was in the back of the disciples minds’ when they asked Jesus if he would at this time (after the resurrection) restore the Kingdom of Israel (Acts 1:6).

Many Christian scholars make fun of them that they didn’t understand and that his Kingdom would only be a spiritual kingdom. But notice that Jesus never corrected them. In fact, in Acts 3:21 Peter repeats the same messianic hope when he preaches about the restoration of all things.

So I guess what the Hebrew Bible promised was still on the table!

Here are some powerful examples of passages that deal with the “day of the LORD”, which is the time of Jesus’ return:

“On that day [the day of the LORD = the day of his return] his feet shall stand on the Mount of Olives that lies before Jerusalem on the east, and the Mount of Olives shall be split in two from east to west by a very wide valley, so that one half of the Mount shall move northward, and the other half southward.”
      ‭‭Zechariah‬ ‭14‬:‭4‬ ‭ESV‬‬

“At that time Jerusalem shall be called the throne of the LORD, and all nations shall gather to it, to the presence of the Lord in Jerusalem, and they shall no more stubbornly follow their own evil heart.”
      ‭‭Jeremiah‬ ‭3‬:‭17‬ ‭ESV‬‬

“It shall come to pass in the latter days that the mountain of the house of the LORD shall be established as the highest of the mountains, and shall be lifted up above the hills; and all the nations shall flow to it, and many peoples shall come, and say: “Come, let us go up to the mountain of the LORD, to the house of the God of Jacob, that he may teach us his ways and that we may walk in his paths.” For out of Zion shall go forth the law, and the word of the LORD from Jerusalem. He shall judge between the nations, and shall decide disputes for many peoples; and they shall beat their swords into plowshares, and their spears into pruning hooks; nation shall not lift up sword against nation, neither shall they learn war anymore.”
      ‭‭Isaiah‬ ‭2‬:‭2‬-‭4‬ ‭ESV‬‬

“On that day the LORD will punish the host of heaven, in heaven, and the kings of the earth, on the earth. They will be gathered together as prisoners in a pit; they will be shut up in a prison, and after many days they will be punished. Then the moon will be confounded and the sun ashamed, for the LORD of hosts reigns on Mount Zion and in Jerusalem, and his glory will be before his elders.”
      ‭‭Isaiah‬ ‭24‬:‭21‬-‭23‬ ‭ESV‬‬
