“Has a nation changed its gods, even though they are no gods?
But my people have changed their glory for that which does not profit.
… for my people have committed two evils:
they have forsaken me, the fountain of living waters,
and hewed out cisterns for themselves,
broken cisterns that can hold no water.”

(Jeremiah 2:11,13 ESV)

These two verses hit home when I read them a couple of days ago: “My people have changed their glory for that which does not profit.”

“Glory” here is YHWH himself. In Hebrew, the word “chabod” is used. They traded YHWH in for things that are worthless. They traded in a relationship with the living God, the “fountain of living waters,” for religion: a man-made, broken cistern that cannot even hold still, dirty water.

The same decision that the people of Judah had to make is a decision we need to make. Judah stuck with their false gods and broken cistern. A siege and captivity was the result.

Will we settle for anything less than a vibrant relationship with the living God, YHWH, the God of Israel? It’s a relationship that is only possible through Jesus, the Christ, who is the way, the truth and the life (John 14:6)!

Let’s trade in the things that do not profit, the broken cistern, for the “chabod” glory, for YHWH himself!
