In the times we live in, it is already a big struggle to live disciplined, holy lives, set apart unto the Lord. So who are we to speak to others about their lifestyles?
Well, have you ever considered that the Greek word for “church” (the people) is ekklesia, which means “called out ones”? We do need to keep a close watch on our own lives and challenge others to watch their lives as well. As a people we are set apart unto the Lord, which means the unity we have with one another needs to extend to every area of our lives – including holiness in our lifestyles. If we compromise with sin, we cause disruption in that unity and agreement, and the church will be destined to fail in fulfilling its mission here on earth.
“But you, beloved, building yourselves up in your most holy faith and praying in the Holy Spirit, keep yourselves in the love of God, waiting for the mercy of our Lord Jesus Christ that leads to eternal life. And have mercy on those who doubt; save others by snatching them out of the fire; to others show mercy with fear, hating even the garment stained by the flesh.”
(Jude 1:20-23 ESV)
Let’s analyze what Jude says. First of all, we need to “keep ourselves in the love of God”. Watch over yourselves while you experience the love of God. How?
- By building yourself up in your “pistis”, your faith and loyalty to King Jesus.
- By constantly praying in the Holy Spirit.
- By waiting on, looking forward to the moment when you will experience the fullness of Jesus’ mercy, which leads to eternal, unbreakable life.
But Jude also challenges us to be “our brother’s keeper”:
- By having mercy on those who doubt.
- By snatching others out of the fire, as you see them following a trail that will lead to their destruction. When you snatch these confused people out of the fire, you will need to get so close to the fire that you even smell like the fire.
- But there is a third group that is so backslidden and toxic, that you need to avoid you’re being pulled along in their sins: “to others show mercy with fear, hating even the garment stained by the flesh.” Because of the seriousness of the sin this category of people is trapped in, you have to stay far away from the fire they are running towards, so you won’t get burnt yourself.
Take heed of your own life and do all you can to be your brother’s and sister’s keeper, so we can stay strong individually and as a church!
