“Now when they saw the boldness of Peter and John,
and perceived that they were uneducated, common men, they were astonished.
And they recognized that they had been with Jesus.” (Acts 4:13 ESV)
This is such a powerful description of the transformed lives of the disciples. In the estimation of the religious leaders they were “agrammatoi” (uneducated) and “idiotai” (common=nothing special). Yet they were able to turn the city upside down by that one name, the name of Jesus!
Just think of it: they were considered “idiotai”, idiots! Well, the word didn’t have that strong of a meaning back then, but their point was that the Sadducees thought they lacked the theological eduction they were supposed to have if they were to teach the masses about religious matters.
What they did recognize is that these disciples must have been with Jesus. Being in his presence for even three years transformed their lives and gave them a ministry and a message the world was longing for.
No matter what your education level is; no matter what your social status is; make sure that is the one thing people will recognize about you: that you have been with Jesus.
How? Spend time with him and others in prayer, and revel in the Word of God! Let’s be “idiotiai” for Jesus! Let’s be ordinary men and women filled with the power and presence of an extraordinary God!
